Biography

Father Lawrence A Toers

Mother Jannetje Zabriskie

Arie is the son of Lawrence A Toers & Jannetje Zabriskie. He had four siblings: Garrit (Turse) Tuers, Hannah (Turse) Toers, Rachel (Tourse) Tuers & Charity (Toirce) Toers. Aaron married Mary E Thorpe about 1862 in Bergen County, NJ. They had six children: Aaron A Turse, Garett Tuers, David Hering Turse, Philip Turse, David Turse & Minnie Eliza Tuers.[1]

His children were the first of this family line to adopt Turse as the spelling of their surname,

During the many years we have been doing research on this family, the specific date of marriage for Aaron and Mary remains elusive. There is a question as to whether or not there may have been an earlier marriage, or whether Aaron simply married late in life since Mary Thorp was 20 years younger. This remains unresolved. Mary is indeed the daughter of John Thorp, as she is mentioned in his will as wife of Aaron Tuers. Mary Thorp is also given as the maiden name of Aaron A Turse's mother on his death certificate dated 6 Nov 1934, held in the family records file.

1850 Census, Washington Township, 30 Aug 1850, has Aaron Tures, Farmer, age 40, living with Rachel Tures, age 26, and Jane Tures, age 60. This is consistent with the approximate age of his sister, Rachel, and his mother, Jane Zabriskie. There are no other children in the home at the time. Value of real estate is 2,000.

1860 Census, Washington Township, Hohokus, 15 July 1860, lists Aaron Tuerse, Farmer, age 50, wife Mary, age 30; Wm Ackerman, age 13; Hannah Ackerman, age 10; Aaron Tuerse, age 8; Garret Tuerse, age 6; and, David Tuerse, age 1.

1870 Census, Saddle River 9 August 1870 lists Aaron Tuerse, Farmer, age 62; Ann E., age 42, Keeps House; Aaron, age 16 Works on farm; Garret, age 13, Works on farm; Philip, age 8, David age 5; Ackerman, William age 90; and, Hanah, age 75. The middle initial of Ann E. is the same middle initial as Mary E. Thorp, the name of record that we have in family files for Aaron A. Turse's mother. Anna Eliza Thorp is also the step-sister of Mary Thorp , so we believe her sister lived with the family at the time of the Census. We have David Hering Turse as born 1859, and David Turse as born 1865, consistent with this census, as David Hering is presumed as dying as a child. The names and ages of the children also correlate with other records of the family in file as entered in a family Bible in our possession. We have found subsequent records, however, of David H. Turse in Glen Rock, NJ , in Manhattan, and in 1930 in Hartford, CT with wife Alice M. and daughter Helen, so it appears that we may be incorrect about David H Turse dying young, and it may be David, with dates of birth also transposed by the recorder in the family Bible.

In the 1880 Census, according to information received from Pat Wardell, Bergen County genealogist, Aaron and wife Mary lived on Werimus Road in what is now Hillsdale, NJ, and later in what is now Upper Saddle River, NJ. Aaron Tures, 68, farmer, and his wife Mary, 51, were listed in the 1880 Census, living in Washington Township, Bergen County, NJ. Living with them were their children, Philip, 17; David, 14; and Minnie, age 8. Record in file. We have visited this area, and a current landowner has provided us with local deed information and the notation of Turse HiIl as being the location of his property. It is nearby what used to be Tice's Farm and now Tice's Plaza, in an area with a community shopping center, and several corporate headquarters.

We find most of the family graves in Old Hook and Westwood Cemetery, but not of this couple. Mary Thorp's father is buried in Old Hook Cemetery in a Hopper section.

Find A Grave website notes that there is an Aaron Turse grave in Old Paramus Reformed Church Cemetery in Ridgewood, NJ. the grave is reported badly damaged and age is 61 with death day January 20. This age does not correlate with other data available, and is not likely that of this Aaron. The best information available indicates Aaron of this record died at age 71.
