Biography

David Tuttle was born on 4 October 1730 in Newark Township, Essex, New Jersey. He was the son of Joseph and Abigail (Ogden) Tuttle.[1] In 1730 his father was still engaged in work in Newark, so that is most likely David's birth location.

David married Sarah Coe, daughter of Benjamin Coe of Newark, in about 1756, based on the birth of their first child in about 1758.[1] Their marriage is assumed to have occurred in Newark, although they resided in Hanover, Morris, New Jersey, where the Joseph Tuttle family had resided since about 1734.

David and Sarah had one documented son named Caleb, the only child mentioned in his will[2], but they most probably had other children. The "Tuttle-Tutthill Lines" compendium lists a son Jabez as well.[3] Sons Caleb and Jabez are mentioned in the "Robert Coe, Puritan..." book, relating to the marriage of Sarah and David[4], and they are also mentioned in "The Descendants of William and Elizabeth Tuttle..."[5]

A possible daughter Joanna is included in the list of children below. A Joanna Tuttle married Joseph Wood, both of Morris County, in 1780. The rationale for assigning her as a daughter of David is in Joanna's profile.

A possible son David is also included in the list. In the "All New Jersey, U.S., Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1643-1890" results for David Tuttle of Hanover,[6] a David Tuttle Jr. appears on the search results in 1787, and is last mentioned in 1814. This is consistent with a birth year of about 1765, attaining 21 years old about 1786, and so appearing on tax rolls and other records after then. It is also consistent with the 1815 death of the father David, after which time David the son would no longer be styled "Jr." in the records.

NOTE that the inclusion of Joanna and David on this list of children is speculative. All of the children were born in Hanover:

  1. Caleb (1758-1832), [7] married Mary Baldwin (d. 1795), then Jemima Beach, had surviving children David Baldwin and Sarah.
  2. Joanna (1762-1837), married Joseph Wood, had many children
  3. David (1765-aft. 1815)
  4. Jabez (1768-1860), married Elizabeth Ayres; removed to New York State, many children[3]

Sarah (Coe) Tuttle died on 1 November 1793 Find A Grave: Memorial #56940961. David supposedly married, second, Sarah Ogden, who died in 1807. Records for this marriage and for identity of this Sarah have not been determined.

David died 12 November 1815, and has a headstone. Find A Grave: Memorial #53629018

As noted above, only Caleb and his two daughters were mentioned in David's will. Joanna and Joseph had moved away to Somerset County between 1805 and 1810. Jabez had purchased land in Mentz, New York in 1803, which deed transfer Caleb witnessed, and may have helped pay for. (In 1863 much of that land was deeded by Jabez's son Jabez to a David Tuttle of Morris County, New Jersey).[5] It is reasonable to suppose that David's children other than Caleb had already gotten their portions of his estate. Caleb was the caretaker of David in his old age, so inherited the remaining portion.
