Biography

Helen was born in 1903. She was the daughter of William Tuttle and Fannie Beardsley. She passed away in 1996.[1]

Obituaries

1. Helen Tuttle Smith, 92, a former social worker who was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and several similar organizations, died Sunday in the Americana Health Care Center in Wilmette. Mrs. Smith, a native of East St. Louis, graduated from Nicholas Senn High School, where her father, William Ransom Tuttle, was a teacher. She also graduated from Northwestern University. She earned a master's degree in sociology at the University of Wisconsin. Mrs. Smith and her father survived the Feb. 27, 1921, train crash in Porter, Ind., that took 37 lives. She was employed for a number of years as a social worker for United Charities. For several terms, she was the Illinois state regent for the DAR and a national vice president general of that organization. She was also national president of the Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America and president general of Americans of Armorial Ancestry. She was a resident of Winnetka since 1934. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret H. Smith; a son, William R. T. Smith; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. [Chicago Tribune, published 25 Apr 1996]
2. Helen Tuttle Smith, 92, a family genealogist who held office in the Daughters of the American Revolution, died Sunday in Americana Healthcare Center, Wilmette.
Intrigued by family lore that her ancestors came to this country on the Mayflower, the Wilmette resident began tracing her roots.
Mrs. Smith's work in genealogy led to involvement in a number of related organizations. Until 10 years ago, she served as treasurer of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. She first held office with the DAR's Fort Dearborn Chapter, serving as Illinois State regent during the 1950s. She also served as vice president general of the national DAR society. Mrs. Smith also was active inthe Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of America and Americans of Armorial Ancestry. [Chicago Sun-Times, published 24 Apr 1996]
