Biography

Ephraim Tuttle was born on 10 April 1710, in Wallingford, Connecticut Colony. He was the son of Deacon Timothy Tuttle and Thankful Doolittle.[1]

Following in his father's footsteps, Ephraim became a sergeant, most probably in the militia.[2]

Ephraim was married to Esther Hotchkiss on 16 Jun 1731, in Wallingford, by Rev. Samuel Hall.[3] Esther died of smallpox on 22 Jul 1732, in Wallingford.[4][5][6] Ephraim and Esther had no known surviving children.

Ephraim's second wife was Hannah Pangborn. She was the daughter of Stephen and Joanna (Tuttle) Pangborn. They were married in Wallingford by Rev. Samuel Hall on 16 Jan 1734.[7] Ephraim and Hannah had ten children:

  1. Edmund (or Edmond) Tuttle (b. 26 Nov 1734;[8] bp. 1 Dec 1734, by Parson Hall)[9]
  2. Esther Tuttle (b. 10 Feb 1736[10]; bp. Mar 1736, by Parson Hall)[11]
  3. Ebenezer Tuttle (b. 5 Oct 1737;[12] bp. 8 Oct 1737, by Parson Hall)[13]
  4. Ephraim Tuttle (b. 20 Mar 1739;[14] bp. Mar 1739, by Parson Hall)[15]
  5. Noah Tuttle (b. 30 Jun 1741;[16] bp. Jul 1741, by Parson Hall;[17] d. 23 Jul 1742)[18]
  6. Timothy Tuttle (b. 1 Jul 1743;[19] bp. Jul 1743, by Parson Hall)[20]
  7. Noah Tuttle (b. 18 Dec 1744)[21]
  8. Hannah Tuttle (b. 4 Jan 1746/7;[22] bp. Jan 1746/7, by Parson Hall)[23]
  9. Lucius Tuttle (b. 29 Apr 1749;[24] bp. May 1749, by Parson Hall)[25]
  10. Thankful Tuttle (b. 13 or 15 Mar 1752;[26] bp. Apr 1752, by Parson Hall)[27]

Hannah (Pangborn) Tuttle died on 22 May 1756, in Wallingford.[28]

Ephraim married for the third time on 16 Apr 1761: a widow, Thankful (Sedgwick) Preston.[29] Ephraim and Thankful had two children:

  1. Ruth Tuttle (b. 7 Jan 1763)[30]
  2. Edmund Tuttle (b. 20 Dec 1764)[31]

Ephraim Tuttle died at the age of 62, on 2 Feb 1773, in Wallingford.[32] He was buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Wallingford, now in Cheshire, Connecticut.[33]
