Biography

Walter Tyrell and his wife Eleanor Flambard had the manor of North Avon (Avon Tyrell) settled on them by his brother and sister-in-law, Sir Thomas Tyrell and Alice his wife in 1370.[1][2]

In 1381, the poll tax showed that Walter and Eleanor were living at Abbess Roding.[3]

Walter's son John inherited part of the estate by 1412. His wife Eleanor married Sir Nicholas Harte, Knt, who died in France in 1415.[2]

Office: Sheriff of Essex

Walter's parents have been given as: Sir Walter Tyrell and Jane Swynford on the Visitations, but James Tyrell and Margaret Heron are a more likely match. See James Tyrell research notes on Essex Visitation vs Feet of Fines and Inquisition of his wife Eleanor.[1]

Wife and Children

Sir Walter Tyrell married Eleanor Flambard (died 1422), daughter of Edmund Flambard and Elizabeth (died 1394). Through their marriage the Flambard estates of five manors in Cambridgeshire came into their possession.[4]

Children

  1. Sir John Tyrrell, (born abt 1382), Sheriff of Exeter & Hertford, Speaker of the House of Commons+ died buried 1 Sep 1437, he was age 40 or more in 1422[1]
  2. Edward Tyrrell, Esq., Sheriff & Escheator of Essex & Hertfordshire, he inherited the Cambridgeshire estates.[5][6]

Inquisition of Eleanor

Eleanor widow of Nicholas Haute, Knight, 935, Writ April 1422. She died on 29 March 1422. "John Tyrell is the son and next heir of Walter and Eleanor, the son and heir of Walter and kinsman and heir of Thomas Tyrell, i.e. son of Thomas's brother Walter Tyrell, and is aged 40 years or more." The inquisition shows that her husband Walter was the brother of Thomas, and that Thomas had turned the Avon manor over to them.[1]

Research Notes

Neither of these entries are correct: Eleanor's inquisition shows that Thomas Tyrell was the brother of Walter Tyrell.

  • Sir Walter Tyrell married Alice d' Adeleigh.[7]
  • Called Thomas[8]

The death date for Walter is given as ‘before 1412’ but Eleanor’s second marriage to Nicholas Haute is given as 1406. Technically 1406 is before 1412, but shouldn’t Walter’s death date be changed to ‘before 1406’? Or is there some source information that would correct either of these dates to make them consistent?

This paper gives some good insight and sources for the Tyrell family that helps to figure out Walter and Thomas, it appears that they were brothers, Thomas married to Alice, they were childless and his heir was his brother Walter. p. 357-383. Hi, I see now where the Walter comes from, after looking at Douglas Richardson source, seems there is a lot of conflict with sources. This site seems to list the different conflict, yet it brings more conflict:

http://www.terrellsociety.com/genealogy/index.php# Terrell Society of America.

Seems Douglas Richardson work is what WikiTree likes to use, so Walter Tyrell and Eleanor Flambard would be right. Then it looks like Thomas Tyrell is with Alice d'Adeleigh, which would go with the memorial record.

The Terrell Society, then has another Walter between this Walter and Thomas Tyrell and Alice.

Kind of a tangled web of sources.
