There were two Thomas Marshalls in Reading in the 1640s and 1650s, one a captain and one a carpenter, and records often don't distinguish them. In a list of ten children born to "Thomas Marshall" at Reading between 1640 and 1654, and in particular three children born between 1640 and 1644, some births are close enough that there must have been two sets of parents, but it's impossible to know for certain which ones were born to which Thomas.[1]
In 1662 Captain Thomas named his wife Rebecca as "my now wife," suggesting he had had a prior wife, and it's speculated that he and Rebecca may married about 1646, as Thomas had twins named Thomas and Rebecca in 1647.[1]
Given that the Thomas Marshall later identified as Captain must have had at least one child born at Reading before 1644, this suggests the existence of an otherwise totally unknown first wife who died perhaps by 1646 and certainly by 1662. If Hannah born 1640 was a child of this Thomas, then the marriage would have occurred by about 1639 in New England and this unknown wife and mother would have been born probably before 1620, therefore likely in England.[1]
