William M. Speed, 79 Pioneer Of Eminence, Dies At Home
SEMINARY, Mar 7.- Funeral service were held Thursday afternoon at the Speed cemetery, five miles east of here, for William M. Speed, 79, who died suddenly at his home in the Eminence community Thursday. The rites were conducted by the Rev. B. A. Ashworth, Baptist minister of this place and the Rev. A. F. Abercrombie of Collins.
"Uncle Billy" as he was affectionately called by hundreds of loving friends, was born May 15, 1832 at his parents’ home in the Eminence community. In 1873 he was married to Miss Jeriah Sellers, who with their eight sons and two daughters, survives. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Speed continued to reside in this community where their children were reared and married and where most of them continue to live, building up a community which has long been known as “Speed Town.”
The sons are Lee, John, Martin, Evan, Wash, Walter, E. L. and Robert, and the daughters, Mrs. Mike Biglane and Mrs. Rosetta Pickering all of the Eminence community. Two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Cranford and Mrs. Elnora Coulter of Collins also survive him.
