Flag of Indiana, USA

Birth 1864
Emma Christina was born in Östra Gunnamo, Gällaryd parish, on January 2, 1864 and was christened/baptized the next day. Her parents were Niklas Andersson and Inga Lisa Jonasdotter.[1]

She seems to have been her parents first child, and the only one as well, her mother dying when Emma Kristina was not yet two years old.[2]

Emigration/Immigration 1882
Her father remarries and she will have at least four halfsiblings. Emma Kristina left her home in Gällaryd on April 14, 1882, 18 years old, with the destination North America. Also leaving on the same day is her younger half-brother Carl Gustaf.[3]

Since her brother is only 14 years old, it would be likely that they already had some kind of relative in US. The next time Emma Kristina can be found in any records is when she marries in Indiana 1885.

Marriage 1885
In the transcribed marriage notice with husband Edward Bard on 8 Aug 1885, she is called Emma C. Nicklas. (No original image available online at FS.)[4]

United States Census, 1900
Living in Indiana, LaPorte, Michigan Township, Michigan city. In the left margin of the record is written "West Seventh Street". This census list her as Christina Bard, head of family, her birth date as "Jan, 1864", birth location "Sweden" and immigration 1882. [5]

Census 1910 states same (estimated) birth year and immigration year. [6]

Research Notes

Confirming identity

The death notice of son Carl states father's name as John Edward Bard and mother's as Christine Nickles.
In marriage notice of son Edward she is listed as Christine Anna Nicholas.
Her correct given name would, most likely, been Christina/Kristina and either Emma or Anna (as they are usually not interchangeable). Her last name most likely Niklasdotter/Nicklasdotter or Niklasson/Nicklasson. A possible match for this profile would be Emma Kristina Niklasson, born 1864-01-02 in Gällaryd, Jönköping county, who emigrated to North America 1882-04-14. The last name seem to have been "Americanized" into Nichols.
Her younger half-brother Carl Gustaf, born 1868-01-19 emigrated on the same day. He can be found in the US Census 1920, also in Michigan City, LaPorte, Indiana, with birth year given as 1886 and immigration 1882.[7]
Those facts stated above makes it quite certain that the person this profile represents is the same as the girl being born 1864-01-02 in Gällaryd, Jönköping county, Sweden. Her LNAB has therefore been changed to Niklasson. Andersson-4409 09:58, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
