Orphaned at young age - Charles E. Clay, a Confederate veteran, served for a time as a sutler's clerk at Ft. Laramie and also worked as a freighter. He was married to Lulu Fingernail Woman, an Ogallala Sioux[1]. Following Custer's defeat at Greasy Grass (Little Bighorn), the marriage ended in divorce pursuant to Indian custom, with Lulu Fingernail Woman returning to her people, joining Crazy Horse's Band. The Band surrendered at the Red Cloud agency on May 6, 1877.

Lulu Fingernail Woman Clay ( Indian spelling for Fingernail Woman: Wi-Sake or Wiya Sake) Fingernail Woman died c age 58 at her death in July 1902. She had been married to several other Indian husbands after being forced to live the rest of her life on the reservation and had several Indian children, none of whom survived over the age of 21. The only two children that survived her were her daughters, Susie and Emma by Charles E. Clay. She never saw them again or communicated with them after leaving them in 1876.[2]

Cheryl, please consider changing her last name to Oglala or Lakota; WikiTree uses the last name at birth field to record the tribe / nation name for Native Americans prior to their adoption of surnames. You can find out more about the Oglala here:

Her proper first name should be either Wisake or Wiya-Sake. "Lulu Fingernail Woman" would be her nickname-- i.e., her non-Native name.
