Biography

Johannes Phillipp Reed (Rieth) was born 26 Jan 1698 in Mannheim, Stadtkreis Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

On the baptism record of his daughter Anna Catharina (on July 19, 1726 in Mannheim), his wife was Veronica (no last name). He is called a fisherman and both he and Veronica were of the Reformed confession. [1]

Marriage

Johannes married Veronica Berckysin in 1724 in Germany.

Immigration

Johannes, his wife Veronica and their daughter Catherine left their home in Manheim, Germany in the early spring of 1727. They sailed on the "Friendship" to Pennsylvania. They landed in Philadelphia Pa Oct 15, 1727. Like many immigrants they chose PA due to the religious freedom guaranteed immigrants. He was one of the founders of the New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church. The 'Reed' family resided and owned lands in (now) Hoppenville.

Death

Johannes died 3 Sep 1783 (aged 85) in Hoppenville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and is buried in New Goshenhoppen UCC Cemetery, East Greenville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. [2]

John Philip Reed, better known as Philip Reed, left Mannheim on the Rhine in what is now Germany, on the ship "Friendship" from Rotterdam to Philadelphia, in 1727. He secured acreage in Salford Twp, Philadelphia County, PA, but later farmed extensively near Hoppenville. (Hoppenville is an unincorporated community located within Marlborough Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania) He worshipped in the New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church in Upper Hanover Twp with his wife, Feronica, whose family had fled Switzerland because of religious persecution. They had three sons and five daughters: Jacob, Michael, Andrew, Frances, Margaretha, Elizabeth, Eve.

He was 86 when he died and is buried in the New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church burial ground.

Reed-23806 and Reith-131 appear to represent the same person because: same birth and death dates, same wife's name, many of the same children. There is a problem, always, with how the German names translated to English. Most often, the last name "Rieth" was pronounced Reed. The spelling "Rieth" would have been pronounced Rite or Ride. I do believe the many Reed families probably had an original German spelling of Rieth, so there may be more John Philip (Johan Philip) Reiths, Reids, Rieds, or Rieths to merge.
Reed-8181 and Reith-131 appear to represent the same person because: Definitely the same dude. Just that Americanized name problem. I vote (should I have a vote) for Reith.......
