Colin (Campbell) Campbell First Earl of Argyll was born in Scotland.

Colin Campbell was Chief of the Clan Campbell, Master of the Household and Chancellor of Scotland during the reign of King James III. Colin Campbell was created Earl of Argyll in 1457. He became Lord Lorn on 17 Apr 1470 by a charter of that date, conveying to him the lands and lordship of Lorn on the resignation of his wife's uncle, Walter Stewart, Lord Innermeath.^[1][2]

By his wife, Isabel Stewart, Campbell had two sons and seven daughters: ^[3]

Research Notes

Colin's daughter, Helen, married on 21 Apr 1478, which places Helen's birth prior to 21 Apr 1466. Assuming no older sibling, one would have to place the marriage of Colin prior to 5 Aug 1465 and his birth prior to 1451. However, Colin's daughter Margaret married in 1469 aged 12 placing her birth in 1457 and his marriage in 1456 placing his birth prior to 1442. Scots Peerage claims his father was dead by Mar 1440.^[4] Allowing that the father could have died before Colin's birth and recognizing human gestation is 37-42 weeks, using the longest time in that range places the birth of Colin before Jan 1441. Considering that he was created Earl of Argyll in 1457, one can be confident that he was of full age at that time pushing his date of birth to before 1436. When he suceeded his grandather in 1453, it is rumored that he was still a minor and, if true, would place his brith after 1432 giving a range of 1432-1436 or 1434 +/- two.
