Biography

Mary Gutsoll alleged wife of New England immigrant John May is a case of mistaken identity.

It is said they married 30 Jan 1603 in Burwash, Sussex, England.

There is, however, a marriage between a John May and Martha (not Mary) in Burwash on 30 Jan 1603[1]

This is clearly a case of mistaken identity.

Since she was not the wife of John May, an alleged unknown burial, in 1651, at Find A Grave does not belong to her.[2]

Research Notes

  • Search at americanancesotrs - 1 hit a death in1687 in England so there is no scholarly new information showing her
  • Search at Ancestry- no records - only three unsourced trees
  • Find a grave has no stone and burial is probably speculative.

Martha married John May on 30 January 1603 in Burwash, Sussex, England.[3] It appears that name should be Martha rather than Mary.

This is an obvious error. I am going to create a new Unknown wife for John May and mother for his children, and disconnect Miss Gutsoll

This person is no doubt "Unknown" The newest write up is the Dawes Gates ancestry It calls her unknown. The alleged marriage in 1603 doesn't fit. they were too young and children not born until 1630. Please change LNAB

Gutsoll-1 and UNKNOWN-86033 appear to represent the same person because: no proof of LNAB has been provided, please merge into Unknown

UNKNOWN-86033 and Gutsoll-1 are not ready to be merged because: spelling of last name must be established

Gutsoll-1 and UNKNOWN-86033 are not ready to be merged because: I'd like to see some source so that a LNAB may be established before merging.

Gutsoll-1 and UNKNOWN-86033 appear to represent the same person because: same/similar dates, same husband and child. Without sources, I would leave unknown as last name at birth
