Biography

Melinda Sophrona was born in 1878 or 1879, the daughter of Mathew Henry Udell and Susannah DeGroote. ^[1][2] In 1893, Melinda married William T. Bensley. ^[3] In 1902, she married Chester Cook in Charlevoix, Michigan. According to the marriage record, her name immediately prior to the marriage was Melinda S. Harrison. ^[4][5] She passed away in 1961.^[1]

Research Notes

Birth date on gravestone is 1878.^[1] This year is also supported by her age of 24 in 1902 marriage record. ^[4] Date of birth in newspaper obituary and Find A Grave memorial is 16 Sep 1879.^[1]

She used her middle name, "Sophrona," instead of her first name. Her husband listed Mrs. Sophrona Cook as his contact person on his WWI and WWII draft registration cards. ^{[6] [7]} The spelling "Sophrona" also appears in the U.S. Census for the years 1920 and 1930. ^{[8] [9]} The spelling "Sophronia" appears in the 1940 U.S Census, the obituary, and the text of the Find A Grave memorial. ^[10][1] Spellings in other documents include "Saphrona" and "Sofrona."
