Church Records

Boston First Church Records pp 24, 34 cited by Anderson[1]

24 Marcy 1638/9: "Mrs. Elizabeth Allen" was admitted to the Boston Church.
25 July 1641: "Mrs Elizabeth Stone, lately called Mrs Elizabeth Allen, but now the wife of Mr Samuel Stone the teacher of the church of Hartford, in Connecticott, was granted letters of recommendation thither."

"I find the admissions were Mrs Elizabeth Allen, Mrs Penelope Pelham and Elizabeth Story. Whether Elizabeth Allen were maiden or widow is not known to me, but my opinion is that not being called wife of any or widow, she was a young woman, for she lived to 1681." [Judge Savage.]

A Penelope Pelham was single at the time.

  • She may have been a widow Allen, since she was called "Mrs. Elizabeth Allen" in the church record on 24 Mar 1638/9, although this was not always the case. In some cases an unmarried woman was called "Mrs." After the death of Samuel Stone, she married George Gardner.

Unknown-13467 and Allen-35582 appear to represent the same person because: I would prefer that LNAB remain Unknown in the absence of new info, or at least keep the discussion going as presented in the bio data.

Bob, but the two profiles definitely intend to represent the same person, so they should be merged; the question is-- which direction? I think the case is well made that Allen is a reasonable conclusion.

The current discussion posted to the profile of Unknown-13467 perfectly describes the possibility that her maiden name might have been Allen, so profile users have a heads-up. Beyond that, I feel that there is insufficient rationale for actually merging the two, as that might "settle" the question by sacrificing accuracy in the absence of definitive proof.

Allen-3921 and Unknown-13467 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same wife. This was her third marriage, first was to a man named Allen, which is where the "Allen" comes from.
