The death date for Margaret See is based on the date the will was proved in Hampshire Co, VA (now West Virginia.) There is no known documentation for the year or place of Margaret's birth or for her maiden name. IF she was a Tschudi (as some suggest but without evidence,) she may have been born in Frandendorf, Canton, Basil, Switzerland
Will
The will of Margaret See is on file at Romney W. VA Hamsphire Co., WVA among the loose documents but it is filed as "Lee." Will dated Mar 28, 1757, proved Feb 14, 1758. Written as follows, same spelling and punctuation:

Margaret names two of her children, George and Frederick, as her "sons" then names the others but doesn't identify their relationship. Commonly, writers of wills in the 18th century, left equal portions to their children (unless they had already received their share as had Frederick.) Secondly, if property was left to grandchildren, they were usually named as "grandchildren", especially if they were children of a deceased son or daughter who was also named. If they were the children of a deceased son or daughter, those grandchildren would split the share left to the deceased. Thirdly, married daughters could not legally inherit property as all property was owned by their husbands. Thus their share would go directly to their husbands, Felty and Jacob Yoakum (who were Margaret's sons-in-law.)
But instead of accepting the will at face value, some See researchers have clouded the issue regarding the people are who are listed in her will. Some have read the names differently, ie Felty as "Betty or Letty", Michael is "Nicholas", etc. Some accept George, Frederick and Michael as sons, but claim the others named are grandchildren (children of deceased son of John who is not named and the Yoakum men as children of "daughter" Elinor Yoakum- though it is highly unlikely that Eleanor Yoakum's maiden name was See). They ignore the fact that no mention is made of grandchildren and they give no explanation as to why Margaret would name some grandchildren and leave out other grandchildren.
With Margaret's will, and other documented records from the South Branch and Swatara, PA, we should be satisfied that we have a good list of the See children: Frederick, John, Michael, George, Simon, Jacob, Margaret, Elizabeth, Madlin, Barbara, and Anna Maria. Not all of the See children were named in the will but do appear in other records and may have died before the will was written. Daughters Elizabeth and Margaret (married to Jacob & Felty Yoakum respectively), and Anna Maria, and sons John & Simon who are listed in other records but probably died before the will was written.
We know that John was killed by Indians in 1756, a year before this will was written. Elizabeth and Margaret-- if daughters (which I think they were) were recognized through their husbands, the Yoakum brothers, who would have legally owned their wives property, thus Margaret left it directly to the sons-in-law. Anna Marie (baptized in 1743 and listed as daughter to George in Swatara, PA baptismal records probably died young. Simon is listed in the 1749 South Branch tithable records along with George Sr. and George Jr. but may also have died as he is not mentioned again. As for Elinor Yoakum (the 2nd wife of Mathias Yoakum), she is not mentioned in the will. She has never been proven to be a See (sister or daughter of George) and, based on Helen Yoakum Black letters, she was an "Irish girl". German baptismal records also prove that Elinor was NOT the mother of Felty Yoakum, thus Margaret See could not, under any circumstances, have been his grandmother.
At this point no official reference to her maiden name being Tschudi has been found. The will simply refers to her as Margaret See. Nor is her name ever listed as "Mary Margaret"...just Margaret.
Sage & Jones gives this will as the will of Margaret LEE, which is how it is filed at the Romney, WV courthouse. Witness David Craig appears in the 1784 Hampshire Co. census (but not in the 1782), in the area enumerated by Job Welton, with 3 free whites, 1 dwelling building, and 1 other building. Don't know what area that was--other families enumerated by him were Badgelys, Carrs, Clarks, Curles, Eatons, Catherine Hawk(Haak), Michael Hornback, Hudsons, George Miller, Stephen Radcliff, Seymours...
Many researchers believe the following to be true but without documentation: Mary Margaret was born about 1684. She is the daughter of Jakob Von Tschudi and Elsbeth Schwab. Others give her maiden name as Tschudi and Judy. There is a Judy family living in the South Branch but no evidence has been found that Margaret was related to them.
However, there is no documentation proving that Margaret's maiden name was Tschudi, Von Tschudi, or Judy. Therefore, the maiden name is unknown.

Tschudi seems a popular choice, but is there any evidence for the name?
