Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Hester (Unknown) Farmer was a Virginia colonist.

Hester Branch was born about 1654 in Henrico County, Virginia.

Hester Branch married William Bass about 1678 in Henrico County, Virginia.[1]

Following the death of William in 1695, Hester married second Henry Farmer prior to August 1696.[2][3]

Hester is named in the will of her husband William Bass dated 20 April 1695 and proved 1 October 1695 in Henrico County Court.[2] Although the date is missing, court records show probate of William's will was granted to Hester in 1695. On 20 August 1696 Henry Farmer, who married the widow of William Bass [Hester], is ordered to appear in court to post security for the probate of William's will.[2]

Death

1700 Henrico, Virginia, United States, estimated . 21 Jun 1763. Edgecombe, Edgecombe, North Carolina.

Research Notes

Her parents and maiden name are at this time unknown, but one hypothesis is Branch, in which case her father is William Branch. DNA evidence may support this supposition.

Need to check this reference which refutes the Branch maiden name and suggests she may be daughter of William and Hester Craddock. Hester Bass - Maiden name?

Notations on maiden name of Hester (Unknown) Bass Farmer: “Researcher Kevin Wynn Biggs gave the names of those he believes are Hester's parents, and believes her maiden name is "Branch" rather than "Bass". Janice Witt also agrees. Hester's parents are William Branch Sr. 1625-1659 and Jane Hatcher Gower."

Bass was her first husband's name, not her maiden name. p. 78 of Orphans Court book 1677-1739 of Henrico Co. Va. by Pauline Pearce Warner; 1963; p. 39 of original Orphans Court book-- “At an Orphans Court held at Varina for the County of Henrico the 20th day of August 1696 in the yeare of the Reign of Wm. the 3rd....1696 it is ordered that Henry Farmer who maryed the Executrix of William Bass late of this County decd be sumoned to the next court to give se’ty for the probate of the Decd will.”…. Thomas Branch and Elizabeth Gough were added as parents in error. This couple had only five known children including two daughters, Elizabeth and Martha. They are being removed as parents of Hester.
Unknown-192994 and UNKNOWN-25574 do not represent the same person because: Need to redo merge
UNKNOWN-25574 and Unknown-224352 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth/death dates; both married to William Bass and Henry Farmer
The parents attached to the former Branch-521 did not have a daughter, Hester. They had only 5 children and she was not one of them. So Branch has been removed as Hester's LNAB.
could Branch be her maiden name? No sources, but Branch-521 has parents attached.
