Biography

Urania was possibly born in Nelson about 1887. She thought that her parent's were Archibald and Johanna Gray.

On the 28th December 1908^[1] she married Albert Evison at her father's home in 11 Gear Street, Petone. The wedding was witnessed by Thomas Lambert of 3 Arlington Street in Wellington, Myrtle Gray of Petone and Archibald A. Gray of Petone. Albert was employed as a mercer and living in New Plymouth, while Urania was employed in domestic duties and living in Petone. The ceremony was conducted by the Roman Catholic Minister Frederick G. Maples.

On the marriage entry she gave Archibald and Johanna as her parents. The first indication that she had that they weren't her parents appears to have been after Archibald's death in 1933.

In Archibald's will^[2][3] he noted that Catherine Urania Evison was his adopted daughter. It also mentioned a "Declaration of Trust" that Archibald had made on the 20th November 1906. In this document he had stated that certain properties would be available for benefit of two of his wife's nieces, namely Margaret Mary Ready and Myrtle Catherine Ham who were daughters of Catherine and William Garner. Mention was also made of his grand-daughter, Rhea Evison.

When she applied for National Super it was discovered that the adoption wasn't formal and the Registrar's Office found a birth entry that was most likely Urania's, although it apparently was for a birth that was earlier than what she had thought.

When she passed away during 1954, there were no parent's names given on her death certificate^[4].

Parentage

One or more of Urania's parents is likely to be an ancestor of Denise Halliday^[5].

A direct maternal descendant of Catherine Arnold has taken a mtDNA Full Sequence test which shows as a "0 Distance" match to A. Wealleans haplogroup T2e1a. This suggests a possible common ancestor of Catherine Prendergast.

These two results combined suggest one of Urania's parents could be Urana Arnold.
