Her parents are unknown, but there is a strong possibility that she may have been a Ransom due to the use of the name in following generations. See information below with regard to her mtDNA which provides clues to her maternal ancestry.
Research Notes
The maiden surname of this Sarah has not been determined. However, one observation is worthy of note. Caleb and Sarah had 14 children who lived to maturity. Six of these used the given name of Ransom for one, or more, of their children. It seems important to list those here. They were: Elizabeth (Kirkland) Deal who had a son named Ransom Deal; Sanders Kirkland - William Ransom Kirkland; Caleb Kirkland - Ransom C. Kirkland and Wilson R. (Ransom?) Kirkland; Nancy (Kirkland) Scott - Ransom Scott; Asa Kirkland - William Ransom Kirkland; Zachariah Kirkland - Caleb Ransom Kirkland. Ransom was not a given name used by earlier generations of any Kirkland Family treated in this report. The repetitive use of this name by the children of Caleb and Sarah may represent recognition of the maiden surname of Sarah. A cursory review of South Carolina records revealed Ransom Families were present.[1]
See below for more notes regarding her possible parentage based on DNA evidence.
DNA
Autosomal DNA
A large number of people have tested their auDNA and as part of a triangulated group have traced their MRCAs to Caleb Kirkland and his wife Sarah. Three descend from daughter Alcey, two descend from son Caleb Jr, two from daughter Nancy.
There was a Sarah (Ransom?) DNA circle at ancestryDNA with 87 members (as of 26 Feb 2019).
Mitochondrial DNA
George Athey is a matrilineal descendant of Sarah and has had a full mtDNA test done. He is a 0 genetic distance from:
Ursula Hocker who is a matrilineal descendant of Dicey Helton (who married a brother of Sarah's husband Caleb)
two descendants of Selena Barton (m Michael Rish), daughter of Peter Barton and Nancy Terrell, with Nancy Terrell as the daughter of Aaron Terrell and Clarissa Harrison (1792-1870).
a descendant of Helene Seidel (1869 Germany - 1932 Ohio), whose mother was Camilla (surname unknown); Helene married Adolph Graupner.
Two descendants of Isabella Pitts (1823-1891), who married Charles Swan. Isabella is shown to be the daughter of Martin Pitts and to have lived in Barnwell, South Carolina
a descendant of Margaret (maiden name unknown but some believe it may be Simmons or Brothers) who married Jesse L Rosier c 1839 and lived in Harrison, Mississippi in 1850
two descendants of Sarah through her daughter Nancy.
two descendants of women whose matrilineal ancestor lived in Norway.
Their mtDNA haplogroup is H5a1. George's earliest known maternal ancestor is Sarah who married Caleb. Caleb Kirkland's family was in Orangeburg District, South Carolina. Due to this mtDNA match, it would indicate that Dicey Helton's parents were in the same area. There is a possibility that Helton sisters married Kirkland brothers.
Right now all we can determine is that all of the above-named women trace back to Norway.
