Mary Herrick

Not the daughter of Zerubabel Endicott

Joseph Herrick married about 1677/8 Mary __________, who died Sep 14, 1706[1].

Mary, the wife of Joseph Herrick, is not the daughter of Zerubabel Endicott nor the grandaughter of Governor John Endicott. That Mary Endicott married Isaac Williams.

The confusion that marries Mary Endicott to Joseph Herrick comes from the following two items:

"15. February. Benjamin, Henry, & Martin ye sons of Joseph & Mary [Endicott] Hirreck junr were baptized ye 15. 12. 1679/80"#S-BvCh1

"December. 4. 1681. Triphosa daughter of Joseph & Mary [Dodge] Hirreck baptized ye 4. 10. 1681."#S-BvCh1

The maiden names in brackets were added by the transcriptionist and are not part of the original record. The children listed actually belong to Joseph Herrick Sr. (by his will), not Jr., and although Dodge seems to be the correct maiden name for Joseph Jr's wife, we know that Mary Endicott d/o Zerubabel (the only identifiable Mary Endicott in Salem at the time) married Isaac Williams.

Caution: There are on Ancestry.com handwritten records, that look as though they could be original records. In the section on Joseph and Mary Herrick, there is a note that he married Mary Endicott. I'm fairly certain that the records mentioned are not originals but were used to compile the alphabetical printed versions of the town records.
