Biography

This information is based on Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration: Immigrants to New England 1634-1635.[1]

The maiden name of Elizabeth, the wife of Matthew/Matthias Hitchcock is not contained in any known records, where she is referred to as "My wife Elizabeth" or widow Hitchcocke."

She was probably born in England about 1615, and she was married to Matthew/Matthias Hitchcocke by about 1642, their first child being born about that year. Torrey shows their marriage in 1640 at Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[2]

Anderson says that the inventory of widow Hitchcocke's estate was taken in February 1679[3] in New Haven, so she probably died there early in 1679. Jacobus gives her death date as 1676. Mrs. Smith says the inventory of her estate was taken June 6, 1676.

Burial: Center Church on the Green Churchyard, New Haven, New Haven County. Note that the Find A Grave entry says that time and weather have possibly erased the location of this grave, a likely indication that there is no gravestone for her at this cemetery. According to Find A Grave her maiden name was Nicholls, she was born 26 December 1608 and she died 27 July 1680. There is no evidence to support any information other than her first name Elizabeth, and her marriage to Matthias Hitchcock.[4]
