Biography

Sarah Coogan was born in 1822 in Ireland or Scotland. She was the daughter of Henry Coogan and Charlotte McConnell.

In the 1841 census Sarrah (age 18) was living with her parents and 4 siblings on Duke Street in St Mary, Cumberland, England. She worked as a weaver alongside her sister Mary & her father. This is likely where she met her soon to be husband Barnard, who was also living on Duke Street and working as a weaver.[1]

Sarah married Bernard Murphy on 26 September 1842 in Cumberland. At the time of their marriage she was still living in St. Mary, Cumberland.[2] Together they had 7 children before his death.

In the 1851 census Sarah (age 29), Pauper Weaver, was an inmate at the Harraby Hill Workhouse in Cumberland, England where she was living with her 2 year old son Peter and 9 month old son John. It's unclear where Barnard was at that time but he seems to have been away for several years (possibly prison) as they had no live birth children between 1850-1857. [8]

Barnard died in 1858 in Carlisle at the age of 36 years at the same time their infant son Barnard died.[9] In the 1861 census Sarah (age 38) was the widowed head of household on Duke Street in Carlisle Holy Trinity, Cumberland, England. She worked as a cotton weaver, her son Thomas as a power loom weaver and her youngest son John was a scholar.[10]

Sarah's marriage to James Oswald, widower, was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1869 in the Carlisle district.[11]

In the 1871 census Sarah (age 48) was the wife of James Oswald in Carlisle, Caldewgate, Cumberland, England. They both worked as cotton weavers.[12]

James died in January 1880 in Cockermouth, Cumberland.[13]

Research Notes

  • No death record has been located with the last name Oswald between 1871-1881, and no census record has been located for her in 1881. Also, no marriage record has been located for Sarah Oswald in Cumberland during the time following James' death & the 1881 census.

Previous researchers have included the following notes:

  • If Sarah was unmarried in 1851, then her LNAB was probably Murphy. Regarding the death in 1878 in Hartlepool, there is another Sarah Murphy living in Stranton in 1871 aged 52 [14] which may be the Sarah who died.
  • Sarah Murphy died in Hartlepool in 1878 age 56 (son John is living in Jarrow Durham) [15]
