Biography

Born 1801 to William Sherwin and Mary Duggan

1815 aged 15, Mary married Daniel Allen at St John's Church, Parramatta

1819 Mary and Daniel had a daughter, Elizabeth who died in 1827

1827 Daniel Allen died, as reported in The Sydney Gazette on 13 October:

"On Sunday morning last two men were shooting wild ducks in a lagoon contiguous with Liverpool, when it is supposed they got into a canoe which upset with them, and melancholy say, they were both drowned. Their names were Daniel Allen and James Marsh. Remember the Sabbath Day, to Keep it Holy!"

Mary then became housekeeper to James Gough (widower with young children), and having 5 children together.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

I believe this is Mary (Duggan) Sherwin (1783-1837). She married William Wells in 1826 and died in 1837.

She is mentioned twice on William Sherwin's plaque but assume one/some of the children added the 2nd reference when she died (and married to William Wells).

Hi Group,

I have a death for Mary Gough nee Sherwin who died at Willow Grove, Sutton Forest on 29th April 1864 eighteen days after receiving severe and extensive burns. Does any one know of a fire in this area at this time that could have caused this or any way that I could find out more information.

With Thanks Robyn in Sydney
