Caution: Genealogical Confusion

As Robert Charles Anderson points out, there were three early Thomas Carters at the same time in Massachusetts, each with a wife named Mary.[1]

Biography

Mary's birth date and place are unknown. Her parents and maiden name are also unknown.[1][2]

According to Taylor, Mary was probably born about 1585, which was about 20 years or so before the birth of her first child in 1600-1610.[3] Robert C. Anderson places the birth of her husband as "by about 1590," because their children were marrying in the 1640s.[1]

This Mary has sometimes been confounded with Mary Parkhurst (AKA Dalton), the daughter of George Parkhurst and wife of Rev. Thomas Carter, Puritan and first minister of Woburn. There is no connection between the families.

Immigration

Mary was admitted to the Charlestown church on 4 (9) 1643 (4 November 1643).[2]

She is sometimes assumed to have immigrated to Charlestown in 1636 (without evidence).[citation needed]

Marriage

Mary married before 1607 in England, to Thomas Carter, the immigrant and blacksmith of Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[2][4][5] This Thomas Carter was the blacksmith of Charlestown.

Alternate marriage information: married at Branscombe, Devonshire, England[citation needed]

Death and Legacy

Mary died on March 6, 1664/5 at Charlestown.[2]

We do not have an exact date of death for husband, Thomas Carter. His will was dated May 5, 1650, and inventory was taken on June 25, 1652.[2]

Response to comment about Surname Dalton. Find a grave is not always correct. The FaGrave memorial doesn't even have a recognized burial place. "Dalton" is not supported by Anderson Great Migration or Wyman Gen. of Charlestown.

Apparently the evidence for Mary's last name at birth as Dalton is from a Pedigree Resource File, which is a derivative source. These derivative sources are uncertain and are not usually used to change or create WikiTree profiles.

Have set Mary's last name at birth as Unknown, at least until some primary evidence is discovered. Please let me know, if there are any questions or concerns. Thanks!

The maiden name of this profile was changed to "Unknown" from Parkhurst, but the citation goes to the Pedigree Resource File for Mary Parkhurst.
