Esther was born about 1850. She was the daughter of Unknown and Tracy Fillmore. Her last name at birth is uncertain, but could be Finney, as that was Tracy's last name at the time of her marriage to Judson Hicks in 1860.
In 1861, Esther's last name is listed as Hicks and she is said to be the granddaughter of Jonathan Hicks, with whom Judson and Tracy Hicks were living.
