Biography

I recently came across a discussion concerning this ancestor on a message board that answered and confirmed a few things I wondered. See the link below to read the posts in context. From what I understand, the original poster received records from NARA on the wrong person who happened to be this Nancy Thompson Crutchfield (who married a Mr. L. Powell) and asked if anyone was interested in the records before they were sent back -

Another person asks the original poster: "Could you give me any info on the Nancy Powell you mention here. I am researching the Powell family and have several Nancy's about this time. Do you have their marriage certificate? There is also a Nancy Powell age 38 VA, on the 1850 Graves census living with a L. Powell 55, NC Farmer. Your info appreciated. Thank you."

Original poster answers back: "Marilyn, I believe L. Powell is Lunsford Powell. Name possibly John or James Lunsford. He was mwy 1850 to Hancy (not Nancy-census is wrong) )Thompson Crutchfield, widow of Luddy/Ludley Crutchfield. They were from the Bedford/Rutherford Cos., TN area. The Crutchfields listed below L. and Nancy Powell on the Graves Co. 1850 census are her children. In the mid 1850's Lunsford filed for divorce from Hancy. This record is in Graves Co. court minutes. I have never found Lunsford on a census either before or after the 1850. "

I had arrived at the belief a while back that the Nancy Powell of the 1850 Census, Graves Co. KY, living next door to all the Crutchfield children, was their mother before I came across this discussion.

The poster said that her name was Hancy, not Nancy, but Nancy is listed on more than one census record that included the entire family, so it could be that the record with Hancy was the incorrect spelling (or incorrect transcription), considering the oddity of the name Hancy. I've seen cursive Hs and Ns that could be mistaken for each other.
