Originally owned by Samuel Puryear in Mecklenburg, Virginia. Since Mariah was mulatto, there is a very strong possibility that Samuel raped her mother and she was his daughter. He deeded her to his son, Alexander.[1]
Owned by Slave-Trader Alexander B. Puryear and passed, along with her children, to his wife with his estate. It is supposed that Alexander kept her and did not sell her away because he realized or recognized that she was his half-sister. In addition, when his wife died, she continued to keep Mariah's family together as one unit, basically willing them as a package to one of her heirs.[1]
Children of Mariah as mentioned in the Will of Mary F Puryear, widow of Alexander B. Puryear: Henry, Mary (likely named after Alexander's wife as a *reminder that Mariah was family), McTom, Victoria & Prince Albert[1]
