In 1852 [Stephen] with his wife and seven children came to Fort Des Moines and purchased 40 acres of B. T. Allen, a tract subsequently known as Englewood, and 80 acres of which Highland Park college now occupies a portion for which he paid $2.00 to $4.00 per acres. Fort Des Moines then was but a mere hamlet, consisting of about 400 hundred inhabitants largely children... Mr Brooks got his family into a comfortable quarters as possible and began to ride the circuit, preaching the gospel in the cabins of the settlers
