Biography

Mary's surname is unknown. We know she married John Esham (or Eshon) before 1716 because he named her in his will 1716 specifically stating, "My will and desire is that my loving wife, Mary Eshon, may not be disturbed of the plantation and houses I now live on during her natural life time." [1]

After John Esham's death in 1716 she married Thomas Bowles (or Bold) who died about 1722. [2] Proof of the marriage to Thomas Bowles (or Bold) is shown by a Northampton County, Virginia Court Order July 1723: "Ordered that Thomas Kellam and Mary his wife formerly Mary Bold, widow of Thomas Bold appear in Court to give security for and return accounts of the estate of Zerubbabel and Zarachiah Bold, orphans. Thomas Kellam in his will calls the orphans his kinsmen. They were Mary's nephews-in-law. [3] NOTE: by 1732, Holloway Bunting is guardian of Zerobabel Bold [4]

Then she married Thomas Kellum before 1723. We know she married Thomas Kellum because July 1729: "Daniel Eshon petitions for the administration of his mother, Mary Kellam's estate. Her husband has removed himself out of the county and the said Eshon knows not where. There are debts against both the husband and Mary Kellam with no one qualified to pay the same. No action shown but her adm was 8 Jul 1729 [5] [6]

3 August 1728. "Mary Kellom" is on the Tobacco list of Daniel Luke and Jonathan Bell as a master with Nottingham Abdill as a tithable under her. [7]

Mary died about 1729 when appraisers and administrators for her estate were appointed by the court of Northampton County, Virginia and an inventory provided to the court. [8][9]

Research Note

Linda Haney recently (March 3 2017) did research on information posted online [1] that Mary the wife of John Esham was Mary Amstadt[10] who outlived him and married a Kellam. Digging deep Linda reported her research results on Apr 3, 2017; "I finally ran down the John Esham-Mary Amstad marriage... It took place in England and it was John Ison."[11][12]

Hi Robert, have you seen the latest research showing Mary's maiden name was Amstadt? The surname was apparently originally D'Amstadt but became Armistead in VA. Not sure what proof is offered for Mary's maiden name but it is an interesting development and something that will be fun to pursue.
