Research Notes

Uncertain Existence

While James Randolph Sr obviously was married one or more times before marrying Mary (Dye) Randolph (1753-aft.1815) after 12 December 1781 (as he has children of majority age in 1781), there have been no reliable sources found for the existence of a person named Margaret (or Mary) Smalley and her marriage to James Randolph Sr. Spratlin-29 22:36, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

Smalley-631 and Smalley-67 appear to represent the same person because: Although this individual is said to be uncertain, it is perhaps best to go ahead and merge them to tidy things up.
Name appears to be an assumption.

Margaret Smalley 1729–1780 BIRTH ABT 1729 • USA DEATH 12 DEC 1780 • Caswell County, North Carolina, USA

"Margret Mary" may be conflation of what is believed historically to be the first names of each of James Randolph two wives as indicated by children in Will.

There is no documentation for the origin of Margaret Smalley.

I reviewed this public tree on Ancestry and didn't see reliable, credible sources for Margaret Smalley. I also reviewed her findagrave Memorial. She doesn't have a marked grave or an obituary. Her findagrave Bio is hand-written by a sixth-generation descendant and he says, "She apparently was the first wife...", but doesn't provide a source or reason as to why he reports this information. He goes on to say, "I am leaning more toward Margaret Smalley'" Genealogists do not lean. We search for facts and reliable sources. Sometimes those sources are indirect and circumstantial, and we write an analysis.

Margaret doesn't have any sources or circumstantial information to support her as the 1st wife and mother of James Randolph's oldest children.

I concur, I also don't see any reliable sources for this person at the links attached, and also when searching for this person on Ancestry. The over 1000 trees that include her there do not appear to source her.

This person should be marked Uncertain Existence and the burden of proof shift to showing that she existed.
