Biography

This is the profile for Mary Ware who married William White of Newbury/Haverhill about 1639/40.

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Based on Mary's estimated date of marriage (1639/40), Mary was probably born sometime in 1616-1622, with about 1618 being a best-guess estimate.

Mary's place of birth and parentage have not been definitively determined. Based on evidence (discussed below) establishing that Mary and her (non-emigrating) parents were known to Rev. Edward Norris, who came from Gloucestershire, it is reasonably likely that Mary was born there. Since Rev. Norris was based in Tetbury and Horsely, Gloucestershire,[1] it is possible that Mary was the Mary Weir, daughter of Jasper Weir, who was baptized in Tetbury on 15 October 1618.[2]

Emigration to New England

Mary came to New England on the same ship as her future husband, William White, in 1639.[3] It is reasonably likely that they emigrated on the same ship as Rev. Edward Norris, who also emigrated to New England in 1639[1][4] and who certified on behalf of Mary and William White in 1639 or 1640 that their parents consented to their marriage.[3]

Marriage and Children

Mary Ware married William White somewhere in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in late 1639 or early 1640.[3]

Mary and William had only one known child:

  1. John, b. probably in 1640 in Haverhill, m. 25 November 1662 Hannah French in Haverhill, d. 1 January 1668/9 in Haverhill. (See discussion and sources in John's profile.)

Death

Mary died in Haverhill on 22 February 1681/2.[3][5][6]

“Edw. Norice” certified “that William Whyte and Marye Ware (both lately arrived in this land) have with the consent of parents on both sides, agreed together, to enter into the state of marriage, as soon as the worshipful Governor here should be pleased to give admittance which they rather chose than any other way else had it been done before their setting forth which upon request, I am bold to testify on their behalf.”

The information comes from an undated paper among the Winthrop Papers. (Rev.) Edward Norris/Norrice IMM (Bap. 1583 Alderley, Gloucestershire-1657 Salem MA ae 76) Oxford University 1599-1609. Curate at Tetbury and Horseley, Gloucestershire. To New England with wife Eleanor, a daughter (who soon disappeared), and son Edward.

Dating the Letter • (Rev.) Edward Norris had arrived in New England by July 1639 when he was admitted to the Boston Church, and was dismissed to the church in Salem on 26 December. • John Winthrop ended a term as governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony in May 1640, and began his next term in 1642.
