Biography

James Utterback served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Sept 1861
Mustered out: Dec 1863
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): 7th Kentucky Regiment Mounted Infantry, Company G

James Henry was born 17 Nov 1845 in Murray, Calloway Co., Kentucky, USA [1] to Harrison Peyton Utterback and Rachel Ozier Caldwell. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

James enlisted Sep 1861 (at 16 yrs old) into the Confederacy and served as a drummer in the Civil War with Col. Charles Wickliffe's 7th Kentucky Regiment Mounted Infantry under Capt. W. J. Stubblefield. He was discharged Dec 1863 (at 18 yrs old). [3] [7] [8] [9]

He first married Frances "Fannie" Jane Curd on 30 Nov 1865 in Calloway, Kentucky, USA. After her death, he married her sister, Paron Ann Curd on 28 Apr 1891. [4] [10] [11]

Among the first 12 children were two boys with the same name. The oldest child was John Edward Utterback, who died young in 1887 of Typhoid Fever. Frances was pregnant with another child when John Edward died; when the new child was a boy, they named him after his eldest brother, recently deceased. So there is John Edward Utterback "the first" (known in the family as "the first Ed"), and the second John Edward, born in 1888. [12]

Note: Although the "Utterback Book" by William Irvin Utterback [1] is used as a source, it is mainly used for lineage - many of the dates cited in the book are incorrect (and it only lists one wife). Correct dates and names are taken from a family Bible. [11]

James Henry and Frances had the following children: [1] [3] [11]

  1. John Edward ("the first") Utterback
  2. Thomas William Utterback
  3. Elizabeth Ozier "Osia" Utterback
  4. Mary Emma Utterback
  5. Robert Preston Utterback

  9. Julia Utterback
  10. James Harry Utterback
  11. Joseph Cephus “Joe” Utterback
  12. John Edward ("the second") Utterback

James Henry and Paron Ann had the following children: [1] [10] [11]

  1. Robert Eustess Utterback (died at 9 months)
  2. Mary Utterback
