(Note: Although long held to be true, information in the paragraph which follows is now being disputed based on recently analyzed DNA tests. Charles Uzzell, a direct descendant, will be editing this profile to provide more current information regarding Thomas Uzzell Jr.'s parentage.)
Thomas Uzzell Jr.'s father, Captain Thomas Uzzell, Sr., fled France as a Huguenot refugee. Huguenots were French Protestants in a predominantly Catholic country. Laws were enacted which made continuing to live in France intolerable so the Uzzells along with many of their countrymen left for other places to live. He spent some time in Ireland then immigrated to Virginia prior to 1713. Thomas Uzzell Sr., who came to be known as "French Tom" settled in Isle of Wight, Virginia, He owned much land in that colony. (Deed Book No. 2, March 13, 1713.) It was in Isle of Wight where Thomas Uzzell Jr. was born about 1716. [1]
Thomas Uzzell Sr.'s. Will written April 14, 1748, recorded June 1751, named his children James, Thomas, Elizabeth (Newman), Mary (Lowry), Martha, and his wife Sarah.[1] Thomas Jr. is estimated to have been born about 1715.
Thomas Uzzell, Jr. was first married to Mary Catherine Parr, a Quakeress.[1] She passed away prior to 1765. They were parents of four children, Zilpha, Thomas, Elisha and Eunice.
Thomas Uzzell, Jr. (1715-1789) then married Sarah (Hines) Uzzell (1708-1798), a widow, who had previously been married to a Mr. Herring. Thomas and Sarah Uzzell, who married in 1764, were parents of twin daughters, born May 19, 1767, whom they named Susannah and Nancy (Nancy Uzzell Lassiter has a memorial at Find A Grave #116785934, which includes some information about her family. There is no headstone photograph. I am not linking directly to her Find A Grave memorial because WikiTree just keeps giving me an error message 571 when I try to provide the direct link. Sorry.) Their other children were Isham (Isom?), born 1766, and Thomas III (often referred to a "Revolutionary Tom" or "Bucklesberry Tom."
By occupation, he was involved in the Indian trades.[1] Thomas Uzzell Jr. left Isle of Wight, Virginia and moved to Bertie County, North Carolina.[1] He then relocated to Dobbs County where he lived on a parcel of land he called "Nature's Beauty." Altogether he owned about 3500 acres bounded by Walnut Creek, Best Station, Bear Creek and the Neuse River. To distinguish him from his father, he is often referred to as "Nature's Beauty Thomas." Dobbs County no longer exists. The western portion, where Thomas Uzzell Jr. purchased land, became Wayne County in 1779. The remainder became Glasgow County (later renamed Greene County) and Lenoir County in 1791.[2]
Thomas Uzzell Jr. died in the late 1700s. An exact date is not known. A will dated 1772 was filed, but a copy of it is not available. There are documents related to his estate dated 1785, so he died sometime between 1772 and 1785.
