Biography

Stephen Vail Jr, is considered to be the "Founder" the "Ohio" class of the Vail family. He is credited as being one of the founders of Middleton, Ohio.

Stephen Vail, Jr. was born in 1739. He was the son of Stephen Vail, Sr. and Esther Smith. He married 3 times. First, he married Rebecca Jackson in 1761. They had no children. Second, he married Sarah Smith in 1763. Stephen and Sarah had 3 children: Samuel, Moses, and Shubell. After Sarah died in 1769, he married his former wife's cousin, Mary FitzRandolph sometime around 1771. For marrying his former wife's cousin (or sister?) they were disowned by the Quaker church. Stephen and Mary had 8 children: Rebecca, Aaron, Sarah, Randall, Mary, Esther, Hugh, and Catharine. Stephen died about 1808 in Ohio.

  • File: Format: story ;From the Centennial History of Butler County Ohio B.F. Bowen Co. 1905 this is written about Middletown's first burial "The first burial grounds( originally called Riverside Cemetery) used at Middletown were located along the eastern bank of the Miami River, just south of the point where fifth Street now meets the present bank of the river. The river was then much further west than its present channel. An attractive and inviting level sward was there found which induced the pioneer fathers to being the interment of their dead at this spot. This location was near the southwest corner of Steven Vail's entry, and here he was buried with one or two of his family. The river gradually changed its course to the eastward and great inroads were made by repeated washings, in the eastern shore line in the river, little by little this old burial ground was washed away and today not a grave or a marker if left to tell the story of the death and burial of those who formed and shaped things more than a hundred years ago. In 1873 but two stones remained, that of George Russell, who died May 25, 1814 and Moses Vail, son of Steven Vail, who died at the age of sixty-two years The names of the streets have changed and central Ave that goes over the great Miami River became what was 3rd street All the numbered streets shifted as well. The "Riverside Cemetery "was located on a bluff along the great Miami River near what was fourth Street now between Central Ave. and Second Street memorialized at the 'Bicentennial Commons".
