Biography

Mariah Valentine was born 1856 in Rice County, Minnesota, USA, to Scottish parents shortly after their arrival from overseas. They lived on a farm near her father's brother, David, and sister, Ann.

The Valentine family moved to Canada about 1870, settling near Hamilton, Ontario. Father, Joseph worked as a labourer for a few years before moving further north to farm in Minden Twp in Victoria County. By this time, however, Maria had met and married a young bricklayer by the name of Alexander Doughty.

The 1881 Canadian census records Alex and Maria living in Ancaster, Ontario with their three children. Alex is said to be a Contractor, the occupation he was noted for after he came to Canada. About 1886 Alex and his family moved to Toronto, Ontario where he continued his trade. I've seen an account book he kept, showing land purchases, cost of building a house on the property and then the revenue from either selling or renting the property. He had a very prosperous business, however he became ill in the summer of 1891 and died that October.

Maria was left with six children to raise - the youngest, William had also died in 1891, still only an infant. At some point she took up the vocation of midwifery, either while still living in Ontario or after moving to her son's farm in Manitoba. By the 1901 Canadian census, Maria and all her children were living in the Medora district, south of Brandon, Manitoba.

She lived out her final years with her daughter, Alice Sprake at North Battleford, Saskatchewan although she actually passed away at the age of 70, while visiting daughter Annie in Winnipeg.

Descendant Maida Gee told my mother - that Mariah had spent quite a lot of time living with them in Cut Knife, and Maida remembered Mariah saying that she would have given up all of her children if she could have kept her husband.
