Note NI5001Irma Faye VAN GILDER (Abram Louis-3, Joseph Earl-2, Abraham B.-1) was born on 6 Feb 1909 in Colfax, Jasper, IA.228 She died on 31 Aug 1994 in Ottumwa, Wapello, IA. She was buried on 30 Aug 1996 in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, Johnson, IA. Grandma donated her body to The University of Iowa College of Medicine, Dept. of Anatomy before her death.

She was buried in a mass grave with 71 other people. The gravestone reads: "THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA COLLEGE OF MEDICINE IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO IN DEATH SERVED THE LIVING"

The funeral took place Aug. 30, 1996 at 1:00 P.M. at Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, Iowa.

Clifford McNeal, 49, Is Electrocuted at Attica Coal Mine

Clifford McNeal, 49, of Albia, IA. who was born and reared the Traer community, was killed Wednesday when he came in contact with a 220-volt electric wire at the entrance of a coal mine at Attica, IA. According to news dispatches in the daily press, he apparently stumbled over a rail, and fell on the wire and into some water at the pump. The accident happened just as he was reporting for work at the mine.

He had been employed for eight years as a miner and as engineer of a hoist, by the Liter Coal Company. He was the father of fourteen children, six sons and eight daughters, seven of whom are still at home.

Clifford was a son of Frank and Grace Baillie McNeal of Traer. He was reared by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John McNeal, in his youth. His father died here in 1931. His mother, who remarried, is still living. Mrs. Inez Steuben, of Traer, is Clifford's step-mother.

Mrs. Clifford McNeal is not known here. Her home was in southern Iowa, where Clifford has been employed for many years.

*Three of his daughters that were not married were sent to the Toledo Juvenile Home to live after Clifford broke his back, abt. 1946.

For Grandpa to make extra money before and during the depression, he not only worked in the mines (where he did not make a lot of money) but he was also a "Honey-Dipper". A "honey-dipper" removed the tubs from underneath outhouses and dumped them. Some of these tubs were dumped at Irma's Parents' in the fields as fertilizer. Mother says that it went to the Orchard, it was first plowed under then sent to the Orchard at their home. Irma Faye VAN GILDER and Clifford Frank (Bill) MCNEAL had the following children:

Danny was born on the 27 of Sept. 1945 at home. Irma was still expecting the 2nd baby which did not come until she was at the Ottumwa Hospital. Her Mother, Minnie and Janyce came over to take care of the new baby Danny. Unfortunately, Janyce being a young child herself wanted to hold the baby and in a riff between Janyce and Minnie the new baby was dropped hitting his head on the clawed leg of a stove. They picked him up thinking he was fine but within a few days a knot appeared on the base of his skull. Irma and Clifford took the baby to the hospital. At different times fluid was drained from his spine. There was severe brain damage and paralysis. He spent some of his life at home and some in a nursing facility. He was on home care when he died.
