Biography

Barent van Ditmars b. Abt. 1640 based on father and brother's birth dates.

N404"In 1664, she married Barent Janse Van Ditmars. Her ante-nuptial contract with the weesmeesters (93-3) for the protection of the interests of her infant children, is of date Nov. 12, and binds her to pay to them their patrimonial estate of 1,000 guilders at their majority, and mortgages her land at Schenectady to secure the payment of the same. These children were Jefie, aged 15 yrs., Ariaantje, 13 yrs., Andries, 11 yrs., Cornelia, 9 yrs., Samuel, 5 yrs. and Dirk aged 3 yrs. (94-1) Van Ditmars was killed in the massacre of 1690, and the following year she married Claas Janse Van Boekhoven. By their ante-nuptial contract, made Feb. 27, 1690/1, among other things it was agreed by them that on the death of both parties thereto, their property should go to her children."

"Van Ditmars, BARENT JANSE, in Schenectady as early as 1670, m. Catalyntje De Vos, wid. of Arent Andriese Bratt; owned land on the south side of the Mohawk, near the Steene Kil; he had a son Cornelis, who m. Catharina Glen, dau. of Sander Leendertse (?); after his death she m. Gerrit Lansingh Jr. Both father and son were killed by the French and Indians, Feb. 9, 1690.[1] "List of ye People kild and Destroyed by ye French of Canida and there Indians at Skinnechtady twenty miles to ye Westward of Albany, between Saturday and Sunday ye 9th day of February, 1689/90." "Barent Janse [Van Ditmars] killd and Burnd his sonne kild." (2 [people dead]) His son's name was Cornelis, — a young man of mature age, the husband of Catharina Glen, daughter of Sander Leendertse Glen.(?) The elder Van Ditmars in 1664, married Catalyntie De Vos, widow of Arent Andriese Bratt, one of the earliest settlers of Schenectady, by whom she had six children, all living at the time of her second marriage. At the time of the massacre she was living with her family on her village lot — on the east corner of Washington and State streets, and it was here that Van Ditmars and his son Cornelis were slain.[2]
