Vera was born in 1895 in Oregon.[1] She was the oldest daughter of Orien Van Schoonhoven and Bertha Greer. When she was born, the family was staying with her mother's parents.[2] They lived in Portland after that.[3][4] Her father owned his own grocery store in Portland. She married John Kirkland on July 25, 1943. He was a 63-64 year old widower with a child, she was close to 50.[5] She passed away on June 26, 1969 in Oregon.[6]
