Barak Samuel Van Winkle was born on 18 Sep 1830 in Kentucky, his father, David Ross Van Winkle (1789-1840) and his mother, Jane Bryan (1794-1874). He married Louisa J Varvel (1841–1870) on Sep 1860 in Jones, Iowa. He then married Almira "Myra" Ann Tuttle on 5 Nov 1874 in Jones Township, Union, Iowa. He died on 5 May 1899 in Auburn, King, Washington and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Auburn, King County, Washington.
Barak was born to a slave owning family in Kentucky (per family lore), but chose to fight for the Union in the civil war. He abandoned his first family from before the war and made a life with his second and travelled with them by wagon train to Auburn, King County, Washington.
