Van Winkle-305 and Van Winkle-48 appear to represent the same person because: Van Winkle-48 is almost completely unsourced and draws information only from "The Miller-Coy Ancestry Page" which, while also unsourced, lists the same wife and parents as Van Winkle-305. The children listed on the "Miller-Coy Ancestry Page" that are attributed to Van Winkle-48 are the same children that can be attributed to Van Winkle-305. A partition record from Perry, Indiana shows that all the children attributed to Van Winkle-48 in the unsourced tree are heirs of the better sourced Van Winkle-305. Therefore, I believe that these profiles should be merged because they represent the same person.
This page has only one source -- a link to someone else's unsourced page at Rootsweb. That just pushes the lack of sources one step farther back. I actually have a great deal more on Alexander, and on his 10 children, and on some hundreds of their descendants for about six generations, down to the late 20th century. (That includes the Frakes connection, which is my maternal grandmother's line.) I've been working on all those families since the early '60s, and most of what I have has been posted over the years at WeRelate.org, but I've only recently begun porting it over to WikiTree. I honestly don't see any point in linking to someone else's bald, unsourced assertions.
For instance, this page says he died in 1838 in Ohio, when there's no evidence whatever that he ever left Perry County, Indiana. Nor is there any source for that death date, which matches no other source. For all I know, the list of children on the RootsWeb page could have been lifted from the information I've built at WeRelate. Since "Alexander" has always been a popular name in the Van Winkle family, I'm going to assume that this page unintentionally conflates two or more different people. For that reason, I would prefer to keep them separate until those issues are addressed.
Fair enough! While we're discussing this profile, do you think it would appropriate to remove the marriage between Van Winkle-45 and the Phoebe Coy (Coy-579) that you manage? Coy-579 is attached to both Alexander's, Van Winkle-45 and Van Winkle-305, which creates a very confusing circle when following the relationships between the sourced Alexander Van Winkle (Van Winkle-45) and Phoebe Coy (Coy-579) and the unsourced Alexander Van Winkle (Van Winkle-45) and Phoebe Coy (Coy-155). Interested in hearing your thoughts on this!
