Biography

WILLIAM VAN DYKE [1] was born 12 May 1756; died 24 March 1807. He is likely buried in the cemetery adjacent to the Springdale Presbyterian Church.

William Van Dyke is given as being among the first enlistments in the Millstone Company of Somerset, New Jersey per article in James Snell's Somerset and Hunterdon County, NJ History, pp. 31-32. He is given as serving as a Private in Capt. Peter D. Vroom's Company in the 2nd Regiment in Somerset Co., NJ. He is said to have been in active service from 3 December to 14 December in 1776. Then in Lt. Jacobus Quick's Company from 7 February to 13 February 1777 and from 21 February to 28 February in 1777. On 10 May 1784 he received a certificate No. 1405 for 12 shillings, 1 pence signed by William Verbruck. This was for depreciation of his Continental pay in Somerset Co. Militia during the Revolutionary War per Dept of Defense, State of NJ at Trenton which was signed by Col. John Ahrens, Agd, on 10 April 1950. [2]

William Van Dyke married 1780 to Maria "Mary" La Boyteaux. She was born 10 June 1758 being daughter of Peter Laboyteaux and wife, Keziah.

William Van Dyke died 24 Mar 1807 in Hamilton County, Ohio. He is buried in the Old Saint Mary's Cemetery in Springdale, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA. [3]

1. Dominicus Van Dyke (eldest son), born 17 February 1782; died 14 April 1814 at 32 years in Springdale, Hamilton Co., OH. He married Mary Packer (1784-1876). He is buried in the Old Saint Mary's Cemetery, Springdale, Hamilton Co., OH. [5]

2. Peter Van Dyke born 14 April 1785 Neshanic, Somerset County, New Jersey, USA; died 25 April 1858 (FindAGrave Memorial says died 29 April 1858) in Marion, Linn County, Iowa, USA; buried Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, Linn Co., IA, USA. He married 11 October 1806 in Indiana to Ada Blue (1788-1872). Known children: Emily Van Dyke Wilson; Theodore Van Dyke; Lazarus Henry Van Dyke. [6]

3. Phebe Van Dyke born 15 April 1787 NJ; died19 February 1881 OH at about 90y of age. She married 1802 to Lewis Packer. Gravestone memorial indicates she was born 1791. She is buried in the Old Saint Mary's Cemetery, Springdale, Hamilton Co., OH. [7]

4. William Van Dyke (the first) was born 6 December 1790, and died young.

5. Margaret Van Dyke was born 3 December 1792

6. William Van Dyke (the second) was born 29 March 1795. He married 1821 to Elizabeth Auter.

7. John Van Dyke was born 7 July 1797. "John, son of William Van Dyke & Mary Labryteaux (sic), his wife, born 7 July 1797; baptized 15 October 1797." [8]

8. Henry Van Dyke was born 8 November 1799. "Henry, son of William Van Dyke & Mary Labryteaux (sic), his wife, born 5 November 1799; baptized 20 April 1800." [9]

9. Jane Wilson Van Dyke was born 23 January 1802 appears to have died young as she is not mentioned in her father's will. "Jane Wilson, daughter of William Van Dyke & Mary Labryteaux (sic), his wife, born 22 Jan 1802; baptized 26 April 1802." [10]

10. Joseph Van Dyke was born 23 November 1803

11. Nicholas Van Dyke was born about 1805 and died after 1860.
