Research Notes

  • A few sources suggest that Abner Vance and Susannah Howard are Nancy’s parents. However “Bad Jim” Vance, an illegitimate son of Elizabeth’s, was Devil Anse’s uncle. If Nancy was Elizabeth’s sister then “Bad Jim” would have been Devil Anse’s first cousin not his uncle. Therefore Nancy must be Elizabeth’s daughter.
  • Nancy is the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Vance. This makes Nancy the granddaughter of Abner & Susannah. Elizabeth is said to have had at least 4 children out-of-wedlock with John Farrell. A “romanticized” version of the murder of Dr Lewis Horton by Elizabeth’s father has given rise to the belief that some of her illegitimate children may have been fathered by Dr. Lewis Horton. An examination of the records indicate that Elizabeth & Lewis did not have a relationship as well as the true reason behind the murder of Dr. Horton.
