Biography

Nelly was born (according to Richard Schermerhorn) on 5 December 1782. ^[1]

She married Jacob Schermerhorn, son of Jacob I. Schermerhorn and Geertje Schermerhorn. They resided in Schodack, New York.^[1]

According to Richard Schermerhorn, the children of Nelly Vanderpool and Jacob Schermerhorn were:^[1]

1. Catharine, b. July 1, 1803; baptized in Schodack.
2. Jacob, b. Sept. 2, 1804; died young.^[2]
3. Cornelius C., b. Dec. 30, 1805; baptized in Schodack.
4. Andrew, b. Oct. 6, 1808; baptized in East Greenbush; married Susan Dings.
5. Jacob I., b. Apr. 21, 1811; baptized in Schodack; married Sarah A. Lansing.
6. James, b. July 11, 1813; baptized in Schodack; died 1825.
7. Eleanor, b. Nov. 20, 1815; married May 22, 1832, in East Greenbush, Isaac Jessup.

Research Notes

A girl named Neeltje, recorded as the child of Andries Van Der Poel and Catharina Van Valkenburg, was baptized at Kinderhook, New York, on 3 November 1782. Witnesses were Johannis Van Valkenburg and Aaltje Turk. ^[3] The baptism is a month too early to match up with Schermerhorn's date for her birth, but otherwise she looks like a candidate for this woman. Her son Andrew could have been named for Andries. The National Association of the Van Valkenburg Family identifies her as the girl who married Jacob J Schermerhorn.^[4]
