John Vandiver may have been born in what is now Lawrence County, Alabama. However, in 1799, the State of Georgia claimed the "Yazoo Lands," the area between the 35th parallel and 31st parallel west to the Mississippi River (what is now northern Alabama and northern Mississippi). The "Yazoo Lands" were sparsely inhabited by white settlers and peoples of the Chickasaw and Cherokee Nations. In 1802, Georgia ceded the "Yazoo Lands" to the United States and in 1804 were annexed to the existing Mississippi Territory. In 1817 the territory was divided, with the western half admitted to the US in 1817 as the State of Mississippi and the eastern half admitted in 1819 as the State of Alabama. Lawrence County was established in 1818 and the town of Moulton (seat of Lawrence County) was chartered in 1819.
