Biography

Joan Vauncy was born circa 1355 in England.

Joan, not given a first name in the Essex Visitation's Mountchensey or Waldegrave pedigrees, was the daughter of Sir Edmond Vauncy of Westley Waterless, Cambridgeshire,[1] and his wife.[2] [3] Joan's mother was the daughter of William Creke and his wife.[1] William Crooke's wife was the daughter and coheir of Sir William Moyne.[3]

Joan married Sir Thomas Mountchensey of Edmondston[2] [3]/Munchensy of Edwardstone, as his first wife.[4] Thomas Munchensy, of Edwardstone and Lindsey, Suffolk, was the son and heir of Thomas de Munchensy of Edwardstone and his wife, Joyce —, the widow of Hugh le Blount, of Buttsbury, Essex.[1]

Joan and Thomas had children:

  1. Jane Mountchensey, sole heir of her father, (died 1450[5]), was married to Sir Richard Walgrave, knight (died 1434[5]),[2] and was buried at Bewers, Suffolk,[6]the son of Sir Richard Walgrave (died 1400) and his wife, Jane or Joan, the daughter of — Silvester (of Buers[5]), (died 1402).[3]

On 27 April 1397, Joan and her husband received a papal indult for a portable altar.[1]

She died sometime after 27 April 1397[4] at Edwardstone, Cosford, Suffolk, England, was said to be buried at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, (Dspm).[1]

After Joan died, Thomas remarried to Katherine —. Thomas died (spm) before 16 March 1403/4,[4] and was said to be buried with his first wife, Joan, at Bury St Edmunds.[1]
