Biography

George Vaughan 1847 – 1914

Geoge Vaughan was born in 1847 in Ambleston, Pembrokeshire, the son of William Vaughan and Mary George. Mary and William had three sons, but William had had numerous children from previous marriage(s). George`s father died when George was two years old. The census of 1851 also confirms that middle son Arthur had also died by then.

In 1861 George was living with the elderly Page couple as a carter. Pembrokeshire was mostly rural and at that time many people moved closer to the Valleys in search of better paid work. There is a George Vaughan, Ship Smith of Pembroke, living in Cardiff in 1871, who might be the same person, although George was not born in Pembroke.

On the Census of 1881 George was boarding at 2 Gelligaled Rd, Ystradyfodwg. The area is no longer called Ystradyfodwg, instead it is often referred to as the Rhondda, or people use the village/town name within that area. Gelligaled Rd is in Ystrad Rhondda, near Tonypandy, just up the valley from Pontypridd. The whole area is famous for its heavy industry and coal mining and George found work as a coal miner.

Around this time George met Mary Harries (Harris), formerly Jones, a single mother from Aberdare who had moved to Tonypandy with her collier husband. George and Mary married on 24th Sept. 1883 at Llwynypia. George moved in with Mary, her daughter Catherine Harris and her father and brothers who were also living at 8 Court St., Tonypandy. The four men of the house all worked underground.

In 1884 George and Mary`s son, William John Vaughan was born (named after both his grandfathers), followed in 1890 by a daughter, Gwenllian Mary Vaughan (using the names of both grandmothers).

By the Census of 1891, Mary`s 15 year-old daughter Catherine had moved to the Dewinton Hotel on the Llwynypia Road. It was managed by a Thomas Williams of Aberdare, so perhaps she got the work of servant there through connections with her Aberdare born mother?

At end of May the following year though, Mary was to lose both of her daughters within a week. Catherine died, aged 16, followed just six days later by the two year-old Gwenllian. Both were buried in a plot bought by George at the Trealaw (Llethrddu) Cemetary, which served the Tonypandy area.

Before the next Census, George, Mary and their son William had moved next door to 7 Court St. In 1907 Mary died and was buried with her daughters at Llethrddu. George continued to live with his son, who in 1908 married Sarah Ann Davies of Cefn Cribbwr. Later that same year, George`s granddaughter Gwenllian Mary Vaughan was born, carrying the same names as his daughter who had died as an infant.

In 1910 his grandson, Windsor George Vaughan was born, coinciding with the Tonypandy Riots. Both George and William were Coal Hewers, working at the pit. The unrest rumbled on for ten months, right through the winter and drew the attention of Winston Churchill, amongst others. George was 60 years old by now, as noted on the 1911 Census, but still working.

At some point the family moved from Tonypandy, back to Sarah`s home village of Cefn Cribbwr, some 5 or 6 valleys away.

George died on 2nd January 1914 at 88 Cefn Road, Cefn Cribwr. He was buried at Llethyrddu/Trealaw Cemetary, reunited with Mary, Catherine and Gwenllian.
