yDNA

Isham is in the FTDNA Vaughan DNA Project 05 Cyan Subgroup. Isham carries the distinctive yDNA Marker DYS552=25. Numerous descendants carry this marker.

Research Notes

Isham Vaughan, does not show up in deed records until 1767. He does appear in quite a few tithables lists starting in 1748, when he would have been 23 years old. . His known sons are David b. abt. 1749; Randolph b. abt. 1751-1752; and Daniel & Robert b. abt. 1754. He acquired 128 acres in 1767 by deed. Prior to 1782, he acquired another 55 acres (no deed on record) bringing his land to 183 acres. His land was cut into Nottoway Co. when it was formed. He gave 133 acres to his son Daniel in 1791 (VA Nottoway DB 01.140). In 1795, his son David Vaughan sold the remaining 50 acres (VA Nottoway DB 01.492). There is no deed on record from him to his son David. Daniel d. about 1831 in Nottoway Co. David last appears there in a deed in 1803. His son Randolph is confirmed to be a member of the CYan DNA Group.

This paragraph refutes the fact he was the son of William and Priscilla Vaughan. William, son of William and Priscilla never used the name Isham. He d. abt. 1800 in Brunswick Co., VA (See Will Book 6.257 and Brunswick Chancery Case 1801-038.) There are two men that have been yDNA tested that trace back to William, husband of Priscilla. They are close matches to each over and to no one else. Hence, William, husband of Priscilla, starts his own yDNA line.

This paragraph establishes that Isham is the son of Daniel Vaughan (married to Elizabeth) of Dinwiddie Co. Isham, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Vaughan never used the name William. He lived in Amelia Co., VA and was there when the portion he lived in was cut into Nottoway Co. Based upon land taxes, he d. there in about 1795. There is no estate record. He has a distinctive yDNA mutation that starts with him (DYS552=25). His son David Vaughan has yet another distinctive yDNA mutation that starts with him.

This paragraph refutes that his wife was Elizabeth Loring and that he was b. in Culpeper Co. There is no record of Isham having a wife named Elizabeth, much less Elizabeth Loring. He has no known connection to Culpeper Co. supported by any sources.

Isham had a brother Joshua that also has a different distinctive yDNA mutation that starts with him. At this time, I am of the belief that the FTDNA Subgroup 05 Cyan originates in the US with the father of Isham and Joshua.

The birth of the ISHAM VAUGHN born to DANIEL and ELIZABETH VAUGHAN was recorded in The Vestry Book and Register of Bristol Parish Virginia [Prince George County] as:

ISHAM son of DANIEL and ELIZ VAUGHAN born feb ye 4th 1725[1]

[Based on Julian Calendar; therefore, year would have been 1726]

Conflicting secondary records exist regarding the birth and death of Isham Vaughan. He may have been born in Bristol Parish, Henrico County, Virginia, circa 1725, and died after 1800, in Nottoway County, Virginia.[2] Alternatively, Isham may have been born about 1726. [3]and passed away about 1807. He married Elizabeth Loring in 1747 in Culpepper, Virginia, USA. Isham and Elizabeth had five children together:

  1. David Smith Vaughan b. 1750 Virginia
  2. Mary Vaughan b. 1752 Virginia
  3. Almond Vaughan b. 1756 Virginia
  4. William Vaughan b. 1760 Virginia
  5. Daniel Vaughan b. before 1765 Virginia

He may have died about 1807 instead of 1800 in Nottoway County, Virginia. Note: Culpepper County, Virginia is geographically out of place, Children Mary, Almond and William are highly suspect.

Research Notes

In Nottoway County, Virginia; Old Deed Book 1, page 140 there is an Indenture dated 29 January 1791 in which Isham Vaughan sells for six shillings and other valuable consideration to Daniel Vaughan land containing 133 acres in Nottoway County bordering on Charles Sallards line, Sydnors line, the long branch, David Vaughan's spring branch; recorded 3 February 1791.
Because of the small amount of payment it is likely that Isham is Daniel Vaughan's father. There are two long branches in Nottoway County but the one that Daniel lived on is one mile south of current Blackstone Virginia. Two sons, David and Daniel, married daughters of John Anderson who lived on the opposite side of long branch until 1815. And Daniel is listed adjacent John Anderson in the 1810 census.
Nottoway County, Virginia; Old Deed Book 2, page 455, Indenture dated 10 September 1803 in which William Vaughan of Nottoway County for 100 Pounds money of Virgina sells to Daniel Vaughan of Nottoway County, one horse, two mares and one colt, twelve head of Cattle, twenty head of sheep, eighteen head of hogs, four featherbeds of furniture. Recorded 7 October 1803.
The will books of Nottoway County, Virgina, for the period after 1845 were destroyed when the union cavalry occupied the courthouse and took all the books out on tables and tossed them in the horse trough out front and burned them. The marriage records from before the civil war were burned also.

Vaughan-1223 and Vaughan-4188 appear to represent the same person because: Birth dates are the same, father is the same and most children are the same

Vaughan-4188 and Vaughan-1223 do not represent the same person because: Different parents, wives, children. Isham Vaughan and William Isham Vaughan are 1st cousins. Their parents are brothers. Isham Vaughan is my 5th GGF and his cousin William Isham Vaughan is my 1st cousin of which I'm 7 times removed.

Spouse has same name. Children w/similar names. Daniel Vaughan (son) Vaughan-4891 and Vaughan-4187 are also the same person. I think these records are the same, but only one set of the parents is correct.

Also note in comments for Vaughan-4188 that you also suggested these two records were the same.

The earlier proposed merge of Vaughan-4188 and Vaughan-1223 was denied by the PM who convinced me that they were indeed different people. I had my 5th GGF in my family tree, but not my 1C7R. Thankfully, that PM helped me sort out an error in my family tree. I have a different wife for William Isham Vaughan, a woman named Pricilla, and different names for their children, but I don't have sources to prove it yet. I'm not the PM of this profile. Have you contacted Dawn Griffis about properly sourcing this profile? If she doesn't reply please let me know and I'll try to source this profile. Thanks for catching this anomaly!

Vaughan-4477 and Vaughan-4188 appear to represent the same person because: I believe that Isham Vaughn is the same person as William Isham Vaughan based upon the dates, locations, and parents. William Isham Vaughan is my 5th Great-Grandfather. Thanks for your consideration!
