Biography

My genealogical journey began many years ago, following in the footsteps of my beloved maternal grandmother, Vera Whitley McCarty. It was the search for the roots of my sweet, fiery, adopted paternal grandmother - Robbie Lee Dotson Vaughan - however, which beckoned to most of my sleuthing. Through the revolutionary advances in genetic genealogy, we finally were able to solve the mystery of her biological family.

Over the decades, I have learned many things genealogically ... most notably about the morphing nature of surnames. For example, our family surname was ‘Boughan’ rather than ‘Vaughan,’ in Colonial Virginia of the seventeenth century. My paternal grandmother’s surname was ‘Dotson,’ rather than ‘Dolson,’ as she had thought. A clerk somewhere may have forgotten to cross a ‘t’!

Currently, I am working to establish the biological parentage of my adopted second great-grandmother, Ella Chambers Hancock Vaughan. I continue to seek the family of the foundress of our ‘mother branch,’ Rosannah Gwynn Crabb. In addition, I hope to learn more about the genetically evident origins of our paternal line, in the Boughan family of early Essex County, Virginia. I would like to understand better the patterns of immigration and settlement of the Scots, Ulster Scots, Welsh and Irish in the colonial United States. Finally, I am searching for the origins of my second great-grandfather, John T Sherron, whose parents may have emigrated from Ireland to the United States during the era of the Great Famine.

I also enjoy researching the family of my husband, whose roots lie in colonial Mexico.

It is wonderful to discover the collaborative work and community here at WikiTree!

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Holly or other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Holly:

I meant to post this a wee while ago but have been caught up working on other genealogy and Wikitree stuff.

Thanks for showing Scotland as one of your interests. If you haven’t yet done so, please join the Scotland project via the G-2-G topic. I hope you get a great deal of pleasure collaborating with colleagues in this great project. If you have any questions or wish any advice either send me a private message or email me.

Please forgive me for being so long in responding, as I have been away from the Website for quite a while.

I’ve left a message on the ‘Scotland’ page and am beginning the ‘Tartan Trail!’

Hi Holly

Thanks  for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz

As Pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects coordinating them is essential. Please ensure there is a location and that the location data matches dates of profiles, avoid abbreviations, add citations & links for sources to support the data, please review these pages   Reliable Pre-1700 Sources  and   Help Sources   for Pre-1700 I note you used a family bible as a source please review the guidance on how to format a source link for a family bible https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Evidence_Explained_Citation_Style#Family_Bible_Records

The United States Project and its subprojects for each state, would be of interest. Adding the tag UNITED_STATES will connect you  Follow this link for  your tags

Thanks, Janet! I am trying to learn the format here, and appreciate the guidance.

Also, most of the ‘Family Bible Records’ that have come down to us have been detached from their former volumes. I will look for alternate sourcing, and will upload the copies that I have soon.

Welcome back to WikiTree, Holly, and thanks for upgrading. You are all set to collaborate with our members now. I hope you discover as much about your family as I have about mine over the years.

Check out the How-to Guide for some quick tips on working with both the Wiki pages and our other members. There is some great information in those pages.

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To get the best results, begin adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to ancestors already in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, it can sometimes help to add what you know on another line. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

If you have questions about how WikiTree works, let me know. To contact me, log into WikiTree, and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment so that I will be notified. You can also click my name to send a private message, or post a comment, on my profile page.
