Sir John Vaughan was Governor of Londonderry for many years. On 19 February 1611, John Vaughan received a grant of 1000 acres and the free fishing of Lough Swilly. A further grant of 1000 acres was obtained, and sold on to John Wray before Pynnar's Survey. Sir John Vaughan was knighted in 1616, made a member of the Privy Council for Ireland, and Governor of Londonderry.
Sir John Vaughan apparently married a daughter of Sir Robert Sydney, 1st Earl of Leicester. Sydney Vaughan, daughter of Sir John Vaughan, married Sir Frederick Hamilton, a member of the Privy Council of both James I and Charles I.
