William was born in Quaco, near Saint Martin's, in 1812. He was a son of David Vaughan and RacheL (Floyd) Vaughan. His father was a major shipbuilder in Quaco.
He married Jane Waterbury Whelpley, a daughter of William R. Whelpley and Mabel (Thomas) Whelpley of Saint John, on May 28, 1838 in Saint John.[1]
In his turn, William became a shipbuilder and owner like his father as did seven of his siblings. The Vaughans were a well known presence in New Brunswick industry.
