Serena was born on November 21, 1857 in cooper County, Missouri and a daughter of James Vaughan and Charity Hill.

In the 1860 United States Federal Census Joseph Vaughn 44 born abt 1816 in Kentucky, farmer, was head of his household in Monitau, Cooper, Missouri. Post Office: California. Real Estate Value: 1000 Personal Estate Value: 600 Other Household Members were Elvira Vaughn 40 Kentucky, and the children born in Missouri, Aselina Vaughn 16, Jas W Vaughn 14, Letty A Vaughn 11, Nancy W Vaughn 7, and Richard G Vaughn 2. Their hired hand John Saley 23, and wife P A Saley 20 Missouri. Their teacher Isaac Alley 22 Wisconsin. On the same page, their neighbours Jas H Vaughan 20, farmer, personal estate 100, his wife Louisa J Vaughan 19 and daughter Polly A Vaughan 1, all born Missouri. Serena was born about 1858. She is the daughter of James Vaughan and Charity Hill.
